Defeat Owl on your return to Ashina Castle (Dusk) after obtaining the Immortal Blade, Lotus of the Palace, and Shelter Stone.

This is as far as you can go before making the choice with Owl. Choose the option to agree that Lord Kuro cannot be allowed to die.

Rest, and then speak to Emma, who has moved up to the Castle Tower Lookout.

When in Lord Kuro's Room and he is standing near the incense burner (this can be before or after the attack on Ashina Castle), you can eavesdrop on Kuro by standing behind the screens at the back of the room.

After doing this you'll follow these steps. When presented with the choice between Owl and Kuro, again choose Kuro. This ending is slightly better than the Immortal Severance Ending. While this questline can be started before or after facing Owl, it must be started before you defeat the Divine Dragon of the Fountainhead Palace.
